Established in 1807, the Boston Athenaeum is one of the nation's oldest private lending libraries. The library's present home on Beacon Hill was built in the 1840s to accommodate its growing holdings, which today total some 600,000 volumes and works of art; stroll the first-floor art gallery to see changing exhibits from the collection.
