Stretching from Boston Common northeast to Haymarket, downtown embraces the city's historic heart, its commercial district and the seat of city government. The renovation of Faneuil Hall Marketplace in the 1970s dramatically revived the ambience of downtown by injecting new vitality into the city's center. Downtown Crossing, which was completed in the same time period, did the same; this outdoor walking mall is the focus of what is now a bustling retail district.
