In this colossal aquarium, interpretive panels, demonstrations and special exhibits foster understanding of some 600 species of fish, invertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Fronted by a shimmering stainless-steel entry, the original 1969 structure centers on the spectacular four-story, cylindrical Giant Ocean Tank. Encircled by a graded ramp, the 200,000-gallon tank offers sensational views of a wide array of sea creatures. The popular Penguin exhibit surrounding the ocean tank is home to three colonies of penguins. The new Gulf of Maine exhibit highlights the variious habitats of New England's marine environments with animals like blue and orange lobsters, crabs, cod and halibut.
