The first college established in America, Harvard was founded in 1636 to train young men as leaders of church, state and trade. In 1879 Radcliffe College was founded to provide women with equal access to a Harvard education; today the institutions are merged, and Harvard is completely coeducational. A city within the city of Cambridge, the campus numbers some 500 buildings, including more than 100 libraries, 9 museums and dozens of laboratories on 380 acres of land, primarily in Cambridge.
