This elegant Federal-style building (1792) with its graceful staircases, arches, balustrades and classical pediments was designed by Charles Bulfinch, the architect of the state houses of Maine and Massachusetts. Second-floor legislative chambers contain original furnishings; the Amistad trial began in the Senate chamber here. Don't miss the small Steward's Museum of Curiosities containing such oddities as a two-headed calf, also on the second floor.
