Founded in 1842, this formidable museum ranks among the first art museums in the US. The initial collection consisted of landscapes by such artists as John Trumbull, Frederic Church and Thomas Cole. The museum today boasts some 45,000 works spanning more than 5,000 years. In addition to a world-renowned collection of Hudson River school landscapes, highlights include European porcelain, 19C European paintings and 17C American furniture.
