Built in 1678, the timber-framed Joshua Hempsted House provides a splendid example of 17C American architecture. The walls are insulated with seaweed and pierced with tiny leaded casement windows. Inside, the low-ceilinged rooms contain fine, primitive American furnishings. The granite Nathaniel Hempsted House was built by Joshua's grandson in 1759. The interior features an unusual projecting bake oven.
