Renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt used 500,000 cubic feet of American, African and Italian marble in the lavish 1892 "cottage" that he designed for millionaire yachtsman William K. Vanderbilt. The classical portico is supported by four marble Corinthian columns. Inside, two 17C Gobelins tapestries greet visitors in the two-story Siena marble entrance hall. The Gold Ballroom—Newport's most ornate—decked with gilt chandeliers, panels and mirrors, is modeled after the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Don't miss the Chinese Teahouse at the rear of the property, where the Vanderbilts hosted small receptions and tea parties.
