Hancock Shaker Village, an active Shaker community between 1790 and 1960, is today a museum village that relates the history of this sect, which for more than two centuries has practiced a form of communal living. Some 1,200 acres of farmland, meadow and woodland and more than 20 structures (those original to the site, some reconstructed and others moved from Shaker sites elsewhere) compose the museum. Exhibits interpret life as the Shakers lived it through more than 10,000 objects, and demonstrations of daily tasks such as gardening, milking cows, spinning wool and cooking.
