This Norman-style mansion (1886, Stanford White) and its terraced hillside gardens were built for Joseph Choate (1832-1917), US ambassador to England. Naumkeag was the Choate family's summer cottage. The unusual design of the entrance to the Chinese garden was intended to keep the devil out.
