Chef Michael White's stunner may be sequestered in the dark-shaded, glossily finished Setai Fifth Avenue located just blocks away from the famed Empire State building, but its soul belongs "among the flowers" (hence the name). Perched above the hotel's lobby, Ai Fiori is accessed by ascending a gently winding limestone staircase. The room is spaciously arranged with plenty of surrounding windows lending lightness to the stylish setting gilded with plush napery, gorgeous floral arrangements, and an elegant bar that's perfect for a solo repast. Through a modern Italian menu, Chef White expresses his ability to cull an expert team capable of great things. Dishes find inspiration from the Italian and French Rivieras, balancing rustic favorites with elegant presentations. Pasta is a standout, as in a bowlful of pansotti -pot-bellied pockets-glistening in silky veal jus and plumped by a filling of braised snails. Entrées have revealed roasted rack of lamb en crepinette sided by a stack of black pepper-flecked panisse. Meals come to a strong close with sweet finales such as sformato di cioccolato, chocolate mousse studded with preserved cherries and encased in devil's food cake.
