Cuisine Japanese

More than $75

Brushstroke is instantly attractive and inimitable, in an unexpected confluence of Japanese country and urban TriBeCa styles. Ceilings tower over unusually spacious tables laden with ceramics and rife with open views into the multi-gazillion dollar kitchen. While everything appears pleasant and inviting, service is... well... not really what it should be. On the menu, celebrated Chef David Bouley offers his own take on a kaiseki menu. This is by no means a traditional experience, but a meal that luxuriates in high-end ingredients, often in copious portions. Buyer, beware of those supplemental charges, which can add up quickly. Begin with crunchy winter bamboo shoots dressed in white miso-mustard, presented with ankimo, tosazu gelée, and elderberry reduction topped with a sesame cloud. Highlights include a rich presentation of yuzu-perfumed and grilled akamutsu blanketed with fried gobo shards. That salver may go on to include more akamutsu sashimi with monkfish liver, giant clam, uni, and a dollop of osetra caviar. Seared Crescent duck breast infused with hojicha tea, served beside sweet potato sauce and vanilla salt is a demonstration of this kitchen's skill and technical aptitude.
