Located only steps from bustling Grand Central Terminal, Hunan Manor (baby sibling of Flushing's Hunan House) is forever busy at lunch, so be sure to get here early to snag a spot. Even when this tight-knit space is packed with an obvious blend of local suits and zealous foodies, the staff remains adept and affable. Like its surrounds, presentations and prices are delightfully modest. The Manor's menu is massive, so bring friends to share plates of Hunan-style spicy pickled cabbage; probably the best scallion pancakes in town; outstanding and silky mai fun in a spicy-sour broth of string beans and ground pork; or white pepper-smoked duck, fantastically fragrant with dried turnips and chilies.
