Like the Judi Dench of French dining, La Grenouille is a respected holdout from another era in Manhattan's fine dining scene—one where white-coated servers fussed over you in a setting fit for royalty. But as over-the-top as the dining room might appear nowadays (think high coffered ceilings, plush red banquettes, and opulent flower arrangements), there is something comforting for the well-heeled regulars who have been calling this Masson family mainstay its second home (one where you're required to wear jackets) since 1962. Quickly disappearing old-world dishes like quenelles and rognons share menu space with dishes like duck confit, served over warm green lentils; and tender chicken paillard, paired with crispy sage and tender squash gnocchi.

      Pros

      Depuis trois ans, venant très souvent à new york, je réserve toujours une soirée pour venir dîner dans ce remarquable établissement. Cadre hors du temps, un décor très 1950 remarquable et plein de charme. Le menu du soir, trois plats et trois vins ne soulève aucune critique et doit être recommandé. Très bon accueil. Chef de rang très physionomiste, je suis à chaque fois accueilli chaleureusement. Très bon service, dans la grande tradition des belles tables françaises. Dernier dîner le 20 mai 2010.
