There may be no better place to spend too much of someone else's money, especially now that Le Bernardin's massive renovations are complete. At last, midtown big bankers and deep-pocketed celebrants have a brand new, upscale bar and lounge in addition to the spectacular dining room that has not one bad seat. Everything looks perfect. Maybe even more. Behind the luxe, honey-tone surrounds, the kitchen is undeniably skilled and operating with great precision under Chef Eric Ripert. However, Le Bernardin's truest devotees may find that at the end of their meals, the wow-factor was missing, as if someone tampered with the volume between each course. Such legacy dishes as hamachi-wrapped herbs and lettuce with carrot-lime sauce vierge combine extraordinary ingredients with Asian flavors that are uncharacteristically subtle. Yet the next course may rekindle a spark in seared langoustines over mâche and wild mushroom salad with foie gras slivers and a powerful white balsamic vinaigrette. A bright, coral-colored char may arrive visually arresting but lack vitality. Then dessert reveals dense and deeply chocolatey Black Forest cake made refreshing with cherry-beer sorbet. The mignardises ? Bliss.

      Pros

Subtle seafood compositions, high quality products, decent wine list (excessively priced) but...

      Cons

...nothing superlative, indecent desert portions (although excellent), unforgivable mistakes (miserable bread quality), thoughtful staff but restless service striving to ensure high table turnover. By no means a 3 stars restaurant.
