To step into Minetta Tavern is to travel back in time—its history dates back to before The Wizard of Oz first hit the silver screen. More recently, this distinctive canteen was painstakingly restored and recast as a modern day institution by Keith McNally. The original oak bar beckons you to sit and sip on a classic cocktail. The back dining room is richly atmospheric with black-and-white checkerboard flooring, red leather banquettes, and a wall adorned with a wraparound mural of Washington Square Park. Note the vintage photos of original owner Eddie "Minetta" Sieveri posing with celebrities. Despite the departure of McNally's long-trusted co-chefs, Minetta Tavern's kitchen remains under steady stewardship. The food, like the setting, is deliciously timeless. Grilled meats are always high quality and mouthwatering like the excellent bone-in New York strip steak. The kitchen has a way with potatoes, so be sure to include a side like pommes Anna, a crisped and buttery cake of thinly shaved spuds. Classic French cooking also shines in items like the wickedly decadent pied de porc pané—a deep-fried Berkshire pig's trotter dressed with lentils, sauce gribiche, and an herb salad.

      Pros

I hadn't been here since the late 80's when I lived in the Village. The transformation from a neighborhood place to a first class restaurant is amazing. The server was very knowledgable on everything--from wine to entrees to cheese. the gravlax appetizer was the best I've ever had. melts in your mouth. I've never had a better New York Strip steak anywhere. amazing flavor and perfectly done. Anna potatoes were fabulous. Don't miss the soufflé. Overall, the only better meals I've had in New York have been at Le Bernadin.

      Cons

Room is still very noisy just like I remembered. Two top tables are right next to each other. While not rushed it was clear that they expected to turn tables over within 90 minutes. We were not in a hurry and our server needed to check and make certain we could stay for dessert. the food was so wonderful none of this mattered.
