Minetta Tavern serves up a heaping dose of nostalgia that New Yorkers can't get enough of. Neon signage out front marks the spot of this Greenwich Village institution, which was founded in 1937 as an Italian restaurant subsequent to its time as a speakeasy. Vintage portraits of original owner Eddie "Minetta" Sieveri posing with stars line the walls of the back dining room, where black-and-white checkerboard flooring and a vivid mural of Washington Square Park frame tables set along red leather banquettes. Up front, the original oak bar is a highly coveted perch for savoring a juicy Black Label burger and skillfully-crafted cocktail. But for all of its atmosphere, Chef William Brasile and his team produce a lineup of classically-rooted specialties that ensure style doesn't trump substance. A slab of chilled oxtail and foie gras terrine with poached leeks is a decadent way to begin, and fillet of trout meunière, sizzling in browned butter, is crowned with sweet chunks of crabmeat, diced lemon, and tiny brioche croutons. Dessert is equally fantastic, so be sure to leave room. If offered, gâteau Basque filled with vanilla pastry cream gives the stellar coconut cake some competition.

      Pros

I hadn't been here since the late 80's when I lived in the Village. The transformation from a neighborhood place to a first class restaurant is amazing. The server was very knowledgable on everything--from wine to entrees to cheese. the gravlax appetizer was the best I've ever had. melts in your mouth. I've never had a better New York Strip steak anywhere. amazing flavor and perfectly done. Anna potatoes were fabulous. Don't miss the soufflé. Overall, the only better meals I've had in New York have been at Le Bernadin.

      Cons

Room is still very noisy just like I remembered. Two top tables are right next to each other. While not rushed it was clear that they expected to turn tables over within 90 minutes. We were not in a hurry and our server needed to check and make certain we could stay for dessert. the food was so wonderful none of this mattered.
