Picholine's subtle exterior belies the superior cooking and rich flavors that await inside. Propitiously set near Lincoln Center, this luxe stomping ground of theatergoers remains unchanged...and thankfully so. The grand dining room is undeniably lavish, with meticulously carved moldings and crystal chandeliers. The bar, set among flowers, is an ideal spot for a pre-show cocktail. Smart servers cater to the affluent crowd and are eager to please. Dishes retain classic appeal while embracing a more contemporary style, as in perfectly prepared agnolotti in a pleasant bath of bottarga and squash blossom pesto; their signature cheese course is a storied favorite. Supremely sweet endings include a roasted peach "melba" served with raspberry-yogurt sorbet.

      Pros

After a couple of excellent amuses bouches I had perfect tortellini with fava beans, great Maine diver scallops, and an exotic fruit soup as dessert. All dishes were highly delicious. I have eaten very recently in a couple of star-rated restaurants in NYC, but Picholine was definitely superior.

      Cons

The wines are - although excellent - somehow on the more expensive side. There are no bargains.
