Chef Terrance Brennan's Picholine shines once again. The discreet entrance of this grand realm, just steps away from Lincoln Center, ushers swanky theatregoers and discerning sophisticates into a truly plush dining room. Replete with lavish doses of old-world luxury, its posh swagger is defined by glittering fixtures, brocade covered walls, and heavy drapery. A number of tasting menus showcase a contemporary vision of Mediterranean fare. Risotto is a distillation of seasonal flavors, as in the autumnal concoction of wild mushrooms, black truffle, and sweet cubes of blue Hubbard squash. An ensemble of holistically-raised lamb from Pennsylvania features seared loin and crispy sweetbreads composed with lentils de Puy, spiced carrots, thick yogurt, and a sheet of chickpea panisse so delicate it seems to hover. Turophiles take note: Picholine's cheese service is without peer. Choose to indulge, and the erudite maître d' fromage will wheel over the amply laden cart and offer a custom-tailored explanation of the cave-ripened artisanal selection. Should you still have room for something sweet, the tres leches cake with brownie ganache and chocolate sorbet is an almost equally impressive finale.

      Pros

      After a couple of excellent amuses bouches I had perfect tortellini with fava beans, great Maine diver scallops, and an exotic fruit soup as dessert. All dishes were highly delicious. I have eaten very recently in a couple of star-rated restaurants in NYC, but Picholine was definitely superior.

      Cons

      The wines are - although excellent - somehow on the more expensive side. There are no bargains.
