Cuisine Japanese

More than $75

With windows covered in decorative fabric to impede views inside, Rosanjin appears cloaked in luxury. The stately yet intimate dining room features heavy wood furnishings and opposing walls of olive-colored silks and interlocking pieces of unfinished marble. Tables are covered with unique serving pieces made of gold, turquoise, and cedar chopsticks carved by the finest artisans in Kyoto. Equally stunning is the impeccable fish, hyperlocal and carefully sourced from a specialty distributor. The nine-course kaiseki may begin with an enticingly subdued starter of pumpkin and tofu in cool bonito dashi with simmered chrysanthemum stem and a tuft of micro-kale. Move on to sashimi featuring saba cured in kelp, supremely fresh red snapper, and luscious, sweet-tasting mackerel artistically presented with curlicues of orange carrot, snowy radish, and purple shiso flowers crushed and sprinkled into a tiny pool of soy sauce. Sushi—think thick and creamy uni licked with a "special" soy sauce, pickled ginger, and osetra caviar—is just as masterful. Rice dishes are compact but brimming with flavor like do-nabe with flaky fluke, Chinese sausage, reduced black vinegar, salmon roe, and oshinko.

      Pros

Amazing authentic Japanese kaiseki cuisine, on par with best restaurants in Tokyo. Great service. Great value for the money - it's hard to find comparable quality in NYC for similar price.
