The understated (read: unmarked) façade makes atera easy to overlook. Once inside this large, handsome, and dimly lit space, expect to be served a complimentary cocktail. This is a nice touch, since you'll soon all be sitting together at the slate-gray tasting counter upstairs surrounding the studio-like kitchen. There is a separate group table milled from the cross-section of a felled tree that is surrounded by grow-walls of lichen for a pleasant, terrarium-like feel. Still, those soft leather counter seats offer priceless views of this young, high-spirited, and deeply talented kitchen. Chef Matthew Lightner's ambitious set menus begin with a series of genius snacks. Gobble up a beer and buttermilk macaron with sturgeon caviar and crème fraîche; roasted beets with bee's wax in flower petals; or smoked swordfish lardo. Outstanding flavor underscores every element of sea urchin with roasted cubes of butternut squash, scoops of chicken "gel," and nasturtium petals and leaves. A triangle of roasted squab breast is artistically arranged with bronze fennel fronds, black garlic purée, autumn olive, elderberries, and huckleberries with a quenelle of chicken liver, heart, and tomato ragout.

      Atera nous a fait vivre un très grand moment, pas seulement culinaire mais également en matière d'ambiance a la fois raffinée et déroutante, moderne et classe. Il illustre bien le fait que l'on peut être encore surpris et subjugué par une table et son concept. Une fois installe sur des chaises hautes autour d'un comptoir en "u" qui accueille 12 convives nous sommes embarqués dans une aventure de 20 préparations de niveau 3 étoiles. La carte des vins est a l'unisson. Inoubliable, tout simplement.
