This striking pile of bronze glass and steel (1958) by Mies van der Rohe is widely regarded as one of the finest International-style skyscrapers ever constructed. Less than half of its "zoning envelope" was used; Mies opted instead to set the slender, 38-story tower on pillars in a vast granite plaza, a radical gesture, considering the price of real estate. He would later remark that the Seagram Building was the only building he designed in the US that met his European standards.
