An extraterritorial community within New York, the U.N. is abuzz with diplomats from all corners of the world, some in the native dress of their home countries, when the General Assembly is in session (Sept-Dec) and during various conferences held throughout the year. Excellent guided tours offer acces to several of the complex' inner chambers, but even if you don't plan on taking a tour, it's worth seeing the artwork and exhibits inside, or strolling about the grounds to see poignant sculptures presented by member nations.
