Running for less than a mile between Broadway and the East River, Wall Street was named for a short wooden wall built along its path by the Dutch in 1653. Today it's home to the New York Stock Exchange; financial institutions occupy offices in the area, giving rise to the term "Wall Street" as a synonym for the nation's financial power.
