Constructed in 1891 of Tuckahoe marble and designed by Stanford White, the 77ft-high triumphal arch replaced a temporary wooden one commemorating the centennial of George Washington's inauguration. Gracing its north face are two sculptures of Washington. On the south side: a frieze with an American eagle, a W for Washington at the center, and the trumpet-blowing statues.
