The world's largest commercial complex stood here from 1970 until the morning of September 11, 2001, when two hijacked commercial airliners were flown into the twin towers, causing their collapse and effectively destroying the entire complex. More than 2,900 people were killed. The site is currently being rebuilt with new office towers, a memorial to the innocent lives lost in the attack, and a museum of the event.
