Paramount Building : Michelin's recommendations
This yellow building with green awnings, distinguished by its central entranceway and tall pointed arch, dates from 1927 when it opened as a 1,028-seat movie palace. Joseph Urban, set designer for the Ziegfeld Follies and architect to Austrian Emperor Franz Josef, designed the theater, reportedly drawing the plans on a tablecloth in a Manhattan restaurant. Live performers included Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields and Glenn Miller. Women patrons wore so much jewelry that the semicircle of box seats was dubbed the "diamond horseshoe," and season tickets sold for as much as $1,000 apiece. Closed in 1980, the building changed hands several times and the theater has been replaced by galleries, shops and offices.
