The third incarnation of Henry Flagler's famous hotel (the first two, constructed of wood, were destroyed by fire) cost $6 million and took over 1,200 craftsmen close to a year to build. In the present grand hotel, the lobby runs the entire 200ft length of the center section with an 18ft-high vaulted ceiling. The Florentine Dining Room is adorned with a domed ceiling painted with frescoes and Italian pastoral scenes. Modern facilities in this 572-room hotel include two 18-hole golf courses, 11 tennis courts, a half-mile of beachfront, a shopping arcade and 5 restaurants.
