Take a trip through the neighborhoods of South Philadelphia and absorb the culture each area has to offer. Your journey begins at one of the oldest Jewish delicatessens in the city. Feel free to grab some breakfast or a treat before setting out for the streets of the Queen Village neighborhood. Pass by some of the 3,000 murals decorating the city as you walk toward Gloria Dei (Old Swede's) Church. The church—a National Historic Site—is the oldest in Pennsylvania and has Revolutionary War soldiers as well as citizens from colonial times buried in its cemetery. See more Philadelphia history in America's first shot factory at the Sparks Shot Tower, then enjoy a break at one of the area's local coffee shops.
Your next stop is the Bella Vista neighborhood, where you can fully experience Philadelphia's Italian heritage and maybe even watch a game at a park designated for local bocce leagues. Peruse the neighborhood's bakeries, spice stores, and cafes before spending time at the Italian Market. Once you've enjoyed some samples from the market, take in the mosaic art of Isaiah Zagar at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens. Mosaics are on display at both an indoor gallery and a labyrinthine outdoor structure. South Street—considered Philadelphia's most eclectic street—marks the end of the tour, but its bohemian mix of clothing, jewelry, gift, and music stores offers an abundance of exploration opportunities.
