In the 18C and ealry 19C, well-heeled Philadelphians built rural retreats on the bluffs above the Schuylkill River. Today the seven elegant homes open to the public provide fine examples of domestic period architecture. Among them is the oldest, 1746 Cedar Grove, a fieldstone farmhouse (off Lansdowne Dr.); the 18C Neoclassical gem Lemon Hill (off Kelly Dr.); elegant Mount Pleasant (off Fountain Green Dr.) with its elaborate interior woodwork; and the 1756 late-Georgian-style Woodford (off Dauphin St.), noted for its fine Colonial furnishings.
