In recent years the downtown corridor has been revitalized with the addition of the 32-acre redeveloped Riverfront in 1999. A 19C canal turning basin is the focal point of the popular Shockoe Slip neighborhood an area of renovated tobacco warehouses and cobbled streets that is now one of the city's liveliest nightspots. At the west edge of downtown, the 1895 Jefferson Hotel remains the most elegant reminder of Richmond's gilded past.
