Vicksburg : Michelin's recommendations

Sitting proudly on a 200ft bluff at a sharp bend of the mighty Mississippi River, Vicksburg was considered the "Gibraltar of the Confederacy" because capturing it was so difficult for Union Troops during the Civil War. Today the town commemorates one of the key battles of the conflict. Only a few of the many fine antebellum houses that once stood here survive, some of them converted as bed-and-breakfast inns. The Martha Vick House was built for a daughter of Vicksburg's founder and is open for tours.
