Bibendum
Owned by Colonial Williamsburg, this imposing Georgian manor house on the James River was originally built in the 1750s. In the 1930s the house was extensively renovated by architect Duncan Lee. The restoration resulted in a hybrid of Colonial furnishings in a rich, comfortable setting. Today Carter's Grove, with its paneled entrance hall and rooms overlooking the James, is decorated with antiques collected by its former owners, the McCrea family. On the estate's extensive grounds a cluster of re-created slave quarters depicts the living conditions and cultural traditions of enslaved African Americans in the Tidewater area during the 18C.
