Predating Williamsburg itself, this lovely "university college" ranks as the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the US after Harvard. King William and Queen Mary chartered it as a theological college for gentlemen in 1693, and in 1695 the foundations for the stately U-shaped Wren Building, believed to have been designed by prominent English architect Sir Christopher Wren, were laid. Today this prestigious coeducational state institution enrolls some 5,500 undergraduate students.
