Cranbrook Educational Community
: Michelin's recommendations
Longtime art collectors and philanthropists, George Gough Booth and Ellen Scripps Booth used the fortune they earned in the newspaper business to found this 315-acre multipurpose art community in the 1920s. The stunning campus was conceived as a "total work of art" by Booth and Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950), who presided over the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Saarinen's bold peristyle (1942), flanked by fountains containing works by Swedish sculptor Carl Milles, forms the focal point of the campus. It joins the library with the art museuma, which contains works by generations of Cranbrook faculty members and students. The Saarinen House, designed in 1927 by the architect for his family, has been meticulously renovated to appear as it did during the architect's tenure here. Also on campus is the Cranbrook Institute of Science, a science and natural history museum.
