Doctor, businessman and art connoisseur, Dr. Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951) believed all people were entitled to education and an appreciation of fine arts, and to that end he established the Barnes Foundation in 1922. Several years later he commissioned architect Paul Cret to design an Italianate gallery to house his collection. Set in a 12-acre arboretum, it includes 181 pieces by Renoir, 69 by Cézanne and 60 by Matisse.
