: Michelin's recommendations
Over 24,000 students attend the main campus of this state institution, 2mi east of Old Town. Though founded in 1889, most of UNM's Pueblo Revival-style buildings were designed by architect John Gaw Meem in the 1930s and 40s. Exhibits at the venerable (1932) Maxwell Museum of Anthropology highlight the university's archeological successes in the Southwest and Latin America, with displays on ancient pottery and basketry and a permanent exhibit on human evolution. Under construction next door is the new Hibben Center for Archaeological Research. The University Art Museum, in the Johnson Center for the Arts, has in its collection of contemporary works important abstracts by Richard Diebenkorn and William Wiley. The associated Jonson Gallery presents shows by community and campus artists, plus works by early-20C modernist painter Raymond Jonson (1891-1982). Two small exhibit rooms in Northrop Hall are the Meteorite Museum, whose c.200 rocks include some of the largest meteorites ever found, and the Geology Museum, with mineral specimens and fossils typical of the New Mexico region.
