Since it opened in 1955, the Magic Kingdom of Disneyland has been America's ultimate fantasy land, a place of pilgrimage that young children dream of visiting. In 2001, after a $1.4 billion expansion, Disneyland evolved into the Disneyland® Resort. Now, the original 90-acre park is joined by a second theme park, 55-acre Disney's California Adventure park. Linking the two is Downtown Disney, a shopping, dining and entertainment district. Roughly elliptical in shape, Disneyland is organized into eight distinct sections-Main Street, U.S.A., Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Mickey's Toontown, Frontierland, Critter Country, New Orleans Square and Adventureland-that radiate out from the Central Plaza. Disney's California Adventure has separate theme areas devoted to California heritage, the film industry and a beachfront amusement zone.
