Western Washington University : Michelin's recommendations
Established in 1893 as a "normal school" to train teachers, this institution now serves as the major state university in northern Washington. Some 10,600 undergraduate students are enrolled in the university's five colleges, with an additional 800 students attending the graduate school. Though the campus sprawls across 190 acres, most academic buildings are compacted around contiguous plazas, showcasing the university's famous outdoor sculpture collection. Now grown to more than 24 pieces and still growing, the collection began in 1960 with the installation of Rain Forest, by northwest artist James Fitzgerald. Among the works, some monumental, others small-scale, is a walk-in piece, Skyviewing Sculpture (in Red Square) by artist Isamu Noguchi. Other sculptors represented include Alice Aycock, Richard Serra, George Trakas and Mark di Suvero. The university's Western Gallery sponsors six changing exhibits a year, featuring the works of regional, national and international artists (in the Fine Arts Building, east side of campus).
