Claremont Resort : Michelin's recommendations
Looming like a white castle in the hills between Berkeley and Oakland, this stately old hotel (1915, Charles Dickey) forms the centerpiece of an upscale resort. The proposal to build it originally was floated in the first decade of the 20C by three East Bay businessmen, one of whom subsequently won the entire property from his partners in a game of checkers. A reputation for dullness dogged the hotel for many years, largely because laws forbade the sale of liquor within a mile of the UC Berkeley campus. An enterprising student actually measured the distance in 1936, however, and discovered that the southern end of the hotel lay beyond the mile radius; the following year, the Terrace Lounge opened on the "wet" side of the invisible line, where it remains to this day. (The Claremont rewarded the student with free drinks for the rest of her life.) International tournaments have been played on the hotel's 10 tennis courts, and its full-service spa draws a devoted following.
