This city of 91,500 nestles against uplifted red-rock ridges called The Flatirons. Founded in 1859, Boulder boomed after Colorado founded its state university here in 1876. Modern Boulder is largely defined by limits on residential construction it adopted in 1977, and by the 84sq mi greenbelt that surrounds it.
