The Broadmoor
: Michelin's recommendations
Born in 1891 as a small casino at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain, The Broadmoor was reincarnated when Spencer Penrose bought the 40-acre site (and 400 adjoining acres) in 1916 and turned it into a world-class resort. European artisans created ornate frescoes and tile work, marble fixtures and other design elements in the pink-stucco, Italianate hotel. Today three 18-hole golf courses, 12 tennis courts, four swimming pools, riding stables, nine restaurants and lounges, a conference center and spa make up the 700-room complex. A 17C pub, the Golden Bee, was imported from England. Penrose's widow, Julie, built the Carriage House Museum in 1947 for antique vehicles. A 1mi loop circles the original hotel and the resort's private lake. One block north of The Broadmoor, the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame, offers ice-skating memories from the 17C to the present. Skating and hockey competitions are held at the 8,000-seat Colorado Springs World Arena, opened in 1998.
