The only major facility in the Southwest devoted to African-American history, art and culture occupies a unique two-story building (1993, Arthur Rogers). Made of ivory stone with a 60ft dome in the shape of a 12C Ethiopian Orthodox cross, its design motifs symbolize pre-industrialized African cultures. Exhibits, centering around a rotunda, include selections from the Billy R. Allen Folk Art Collection, considered among the best contemporary collections in the US.
