Founded in 1888, the zoo keeps 2,000 animals in two sections of 85 developed acres. The larger ZooNorth is in transition, its containments being replaced by new habitat areas such as a tiger exhibit. In the Bird & Reptile Building is a rare tuatara; the New Zealand lizard is considered the only surviving direct descendant of dinosaurs. Wilds of Africa, south of Cedar Creek, boasts six expansive habitats of forest, mountain, woodland, river, desert and bush landscapes. From the Iliff Environmental Gallery, visitors take a .25mi nature trail to the Hamon Gorilla Conservation Research Center, where great apes forage on two lush acres. A 1mi Monorail Safari takes in 25 acres of habitats, featuring a prolific okapi population and other antelope and birds.
