On November 22, 1963, alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald fired shots at President John F. Kennedy from this level of the former Texas School Book Depository building. Today the entire 9,000sq-ft floor holds a moving tribute to Kennedy's life, career and death. Although the mood is hushed and reverential, exhibits do not canonize JFK. Audio programs, descriptive text, archival photographs and film footage (including 45min of video) treat the 35th president as a historical figure. After a look at JFK's family history, marriage and early career, exhibits focus on the 1960 election campaign and the 1,000 days of the Kennedy presidency, especially the events leading to the assassination. The southeast corner window-from where Oswald allegedly shot the president-has been re-created to look as it did when investigators discovered it, with cardboard boxes stacked to create a hiding place. A final area considers a variety of conspiracy theories and possible motives for Kennedy's murder. Display cases showcase international tributes; visitors also are encouraged to share their personal reflections in memory books.The Sixth Floor Museum is within Dealey Plaza National Historic Landmark district, six square blocks that encompass sites important to the Kennedy assassination and its aftermath.
