Another architectural masterpiece on campus, the museum of art (1932) is a fantasy of intricate brickwork listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Worthy of such a striking building, the art objects inside number more than 8,000. Most impressive is the Asian collection, which includes Samurai armor, ancient Buddhist sculptures and many items from royal Chinese tombs. One room is dominated by a dazzlingly elaborate, 10ft-high 18C Chinese pagoda fashioned from jade, teak and bronze. The museum also contains a fine collection of Northwest art. Visitors weary of walking may seek respite in the interior courtyard, a quiet sanctuary of fountains, flowers and colonnades.
