Walnut Canyon National Monument
: Michelin's recommendations
A set of Sinagua cliff dwellings, occupied from the early 12C to mid-13C, are built into the 350ft-high walls of Walnut Creek canyon. Most ruins are well below the canyon rim, nestled in alcoves in the overhanging rock. The Island Trail (.9mi) requires a degree of high-altitude fitness, but visitors who descend 185 ft (via 240 steps) are rewarded with the chance to crawl through two dozen ancient dwellings. Ruins may be viewed from farther away by those walking the more-level Rim Trail (.7mi).
