Hundreds of Pueblo-style masonry ruins are spread across this vast volcanic plain, remains of a Sinagua farming community that lived here 800 years ago. The highlight of the 55sq-mi preserve is the Wupatki Ruins, accessible from an overlook or a .5mi trail. The extraordinary site includes a 100-room pueblo, ball court and amphitheater. The Wukoki Ruins, reached by a .2mi trail, comprise an isolated square tower and several rooms, surrounded by the pastel shades of the Painted Desert.
