The first permanent non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley. An adobe fort was built along Las Vegas Creek in 1855 by William Bringhurst and 29 of his fellow Mormons, who arrived here from Utah. The outpost, equipped with a post office, served as a way station for travelers along the Spanish Trail to California.
