Queen Mary : Michelin's recommendations
Dominating Long Beach Harbor at the mouth of the Los Angeles River, this renowned passenger ship was permanently docked here in 1967 after 31 years of service in Great Britain's Cunard White Star line. On board, visitors can explore the bridge, officers' quarters and other operational centers; passenger suites and dining rooms; the engine room, with its massive propeller box; and a display of model ships. Throughout, display cases and documentary photographs illustrate life aboard the Queen Mary and showcase some of her celebrated passengers. Restaurants and snack and souvenir shops are scattered throughout the ship, and a hotel occupies three of its 12 decks.Built in the shipyards of Clyde Bank, Scotland, between 1930 and 1934, the Queen Mary made her maiden voyage in May 1936. Converted for military use during World War II, she transported more than 750,000 troops a distance of over 550,000mi, earning the nickname Gray Ghost for her naval camouflage paint and zigzag ocean routes. In July 1947, the ship returned to civilian use. As the world's largest and reputedly most luxurious passenger vessel, the Queen Mary was a favorite of such international celebrities and socialites as Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire, Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. She reigns today as the centerpiece of Queen Mary Seaport, Long Beach's most prominent attraction.
