Library Tower
Library Tower
: Michelin's recommendations
When I. M. Pei & Partners built this 73-story Italian granite skyscraper (1991), it was the tallest building (1,017ft) west of the Mississippi. Pei topped the building with a distinctive illuminated crown and employed a zigzag motif that pays homage to the many examples of Art Deco architecture in the immediate vicinity. An office building, it is called the Library Tower because the owners purchased air rights above the Los Angeles Central Library directly across Fifth Street. Those funds paid for the library's restoration and expansion after it was seriously damaged by fire. Film buffs will recognize this distinctive building from scenes in the 1996 film Independence Day.
