Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) : Michelin's recommendations
This sprawling six-building complex, generally referred to by the acronym LACMA, is the nation's largest art museum west of Chicago. Housing a broad collection ranging from Egyptian and pre-Columbian art to contemporary works, LACMA is also the city's principal venue for major traveling exhibits, and offers regular programs of lectures, music and films.LACMA's holdings now comprise more than 110,000 works, their range evident in the museum's 11 curatorial divisions: American art, ancient and Islamic art, costumes and textiles, decorative arts, European painting and sculpture, Far Eastern art, Indian and Southeast Asian art, Japanese art, photography, prints and drawings, and modern and contemporary art. Though such a far-reaching curatorial approach sometimes leads to greater breadth than depth in the works on view, the museum's particular strengths include the Center for German Expressionist Studies-the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world-and outstanding Japanese holdings.Since 2004 the museum has been working with world-renowned architect Renzo Piano to develop a new, more unified master plan for the campus. By the end of 2006 nearly $200 million had been raised but a design had not been finalized.
